sitting on the mower in the centre of the massively structured Queen’s Park Oval stadium The outfield is lustrously green moist and well watered It’s been an unfussy day for Faria and his groundstaff “You know it’s a dead rubber so there aren’t too many anxious people asking me how the pitch would behave” he says There hasn’t been any frantic queries from the home team about the track The nature of the pitch won’t concern the West Indies too much for irrespective of the behaviour of the surface they have found new means to implode so much so that a 3-0 series win is up for grabs for Virat Kohli and his men It’s the rain that keeps Faria preoccupied than the men The incessant showers leading up to the match has kept him and his staff on their toes or rather on the mower “We had it this morning and we don’t know if we are getting the sun Maybe before 5 o’ clock this evening we will have rain again So you have to put the water when you want You can’t just put water and leave it there” he says The looming tropical hills behind give the stadium a postcard-like feel while the bustle inside and around it furnishes an intimacy that several new stadiums here are so terribly bereft of Ronald a former left-handed opener who had plied his trade in the 70s So he says he is a “batsman’s groundsman” “I don’t fix no wicket to help the bowler if the bowler is good and gets a wicket then good But I don’t put no wicket on which the bowler will kill the batsmen” he says assuring the strip will aid stroke-makers on the first few days before it starts turning from the fourth day “But there will be bounce and turn” he forewarns His words will please Ashwin eight wickets shy of becoming the fastest Indian to the 200-wicket milestone The honours board inside the Queen’s Park Club will give you goosebumps Three from India’s famed spin quartet have their names inscribed on it BS Chandrasekhar’s 6 for 120 in 1976 a match more famous for India’s epic run chase Bishan Singh Bedi’s 5 for 82 in the previous Test of the same series and S Venkataraghavan’s 5 for 95 in the tour of 1971 There is also twin entries of the veritable leg-spinner Subash Gupte-7 for 162 and 5 for 107 both achieved in India’s maiden expedition to the Caribbean in 1952 Another attestation of the Oval surface’s conduciveness to the spinners is that Lance Gibbs and Inshan Ali are among the top 10 wicket-takers on this ground-Gibbs the finest spinner from these islands has taken 52 wickets from 13 matches while Ali has 29 scalps from 7 matches It’s just not the past deeds of his tribe of spinners or the words of the curator that would please Ashwin; his current form must give him confidence He is in such fine rhythm and “mind space” to use his skipper’s favourite phrase that he has taken the nature of the surface out of the equation He has prised out most of his 16 wickets with delectable drift and flight In fact none of his bounties had come off typical spinning tracks The surface in North Sound was sluggish Hence even if the surface did spin it’s slowness of the surface have batsmen ample time to gauge the turn Sabina Park had bounce but little spin Queen’s Park Oval promises both spin and bounce in which case facing Ashwin could be a torment It would be interesting to note whether Amit Mishra gets a call The leggie hasn’t bowled badly this series but at times he was unlucky and at times the surfaces were too slow it rendered him impotent But Oval has all the ingredients for Mishra to prosper There is a network of fine cracks on the surface which Ronald assures will not widen unduly in a way that will create uneven bounce to any great extent “It’s mighty hard” he says thudding the surface a few times with his fists “I want a hard wicket We will be passing the cutter on the pitch again And on the morning (of the match) we’ll do that again The surface won’t crack until the fourth or fifth day Within the first three days I won’t have to do anything on No footmarks to fix and all that” he emphasises There is a spattering of dry brown unevenly cut grass on the track The colour Faria says is because of the rolling when mud was mixed with the grass “It’s all live grass This was started a week or so ago and it’ll be cleaned out before the match The surface will produce a result for sure If you look at the previous matches Queen’s Park Oval has produced results more often than not” It’s not a loose claim Since 1993 15 off the 18 matches here have produced a result It’s not given to high scores either Apart from the drawn Test between England and West Indies in 2009 no team has scored in excess of 500 in the last 10 years History is within the grasp of Kohli To become the first Indian skipper to win three Tests in a single with a 3-6 6-3 6-4 6-4 defeat to Gilles Muller that could send him tumbling out of the top 150 Tomic was returning to tournament play for the first time since his first round loss at Wimbledon in July after which he said he was bored with tennis and had played at 50 percent for much of his career The 24-year-old started brightly by taking the first set off the 19th seed on Monday but his lack of match fitness told as despite frequent treatment from the trainer he lost the next three to bow out at the first hurdle in a third straight grand slam Having already plummeted from 39 to 146 in the rankings since Wimbledon Tomic now faces the very real prospect of being forced to request a wild card from Tennis Australia for his home grand slam in Melbourne in January In typically candid comments afterwards Tomic said he had his motivation back after his break but still felt “trapped” in the sport he has played fulltime since he was a child given his lack of other options to fund his lifestyle “I mean it’s tough Everyone has their own work their own job and it’s not like I can go and start real estate or something restaurants I’ve got no idea about that” he told the Australian Associated Press “Yes I can afford to do those things but I’ve got no idea My job’s only to play tennis and it’s all I know I’m not going to finish a doctor’s degree I’m not the smartest person in the world” Tomic’s failure to fulfil his huge potential has been a matter of great frustration to his compatriots and his US Open appearances have featured almost as many controversies as memorable victories He bowed out in first round last year after a foul-mouthed rant at a heckler in the crowd and was given the unflattering nickname of “Tomic the Tank Engine” after his second round capitulation against Andy Roddick in 2012 Tennis Australia head of performance Wally Masur warned him pre-tournament to be prepared for the grind of the minor tours if he fails to win a match at the US Open Tomic though reminded journalists he had battled back from a similarly low ranking after double hip surgery in 2014 “It’s no sort of threat for me” he added “I’ve been in this position before World Cup match on a rainy evening at London’s Wembley stadium Yet the action is really happening on a balmy night in Marrakech It sounds like science fiction yet sports marketing guru Patrick Nally says that with technology advancing it will soon be reality Nally widely credited with creating the global cash cow the sport has become says that soccer’s governing body FIFA needs to react and radically alter what he says is as an outdated World Cup hosting model The World Cup has always been hosted in a single country over a month-long period except in 2002 when it was shared between Japan and South Korea Hundreds of thousands of fans flock to the host nation turning it into a logistical nightmare although more watch matches on huge open air screens at so-called “fan fests” than in the stadiums themselves Like many critics Nally says the bidding process is open to horse-trading – as laid bare by the so-called Garcia report published by FIFA last week into race to host the 2018 and 2022 tournaments won by Russia and Qatar respectively Nally said that despite changes to the bidding process which will now allow FIFA’s 211-member Congress to choose the hosts rather than the executive committee the system was still far from perfect “One assumes that national federations who will bid in the future will be looking at all sorts of ways to influence the outcome” he said “I don’t think the culture could be changed overnight” “Who’s World Cup is this It’s the fans’ World Cup it’s not FIFA’s World Cup” he added “Technology allows the event to be staged very differently way in a far less politically manipulated way” Nally said the key would be new technology which would allow holographic images of matches to be beamed into stadiums around the world “If I am in Wembley I will be looking at the Wembley pitch and I will be seeing live what is going on at a pitch somewhere else in the world” he said “Technology reproduces it in such a way you would not know that it’s not before your very eyes” “You can show every game in stadiums in every one of FIFA’s 211 member nations You don’t necessarily need to put the World Cup all in one country” Nally who brokered FIFA’s first major sponsorship deal — with Coca Cola — ahead of the 1978 World Cup worked as a consultant on Japan’s bid to host the 2022 World Cup which included a proposal to broadcast holographic images of matches live to 400 stadiums around the world He now believes matches can be played around the globe provided they are co-ordinated so that teams did not have to travel thousands of kilometres across time zones between games His proposal is similar to Euro 2020 which will be played in 13 cities across the continent although European soccer’s governing body UEFA has said it will be a one-off “(Euro 2020) is going to be an interesting experiment because” said Nally who has long since disassociated himself from FIFA “It’s a small step in the direction I’m proposing” Nally said he would like fans and players to be given a say in choosing hosts cities – though he admitted it was a long shot “It would be nice to think they could but I don’t know the structure that would allow them to do this” he said “The only way it could be done is through national associations — and they don’t necessarily listen to their fans” For all the latest Sports News download Indian Express App More Top success rate and smooth coordination among hospitals At a meeting held on February 9 the state heart transplant committee has defined a new set of guidelines for heart transplants The committee has Dr Anvay Mulay cardiovascular surgeon at Mumbai’s Fortis hospital as chairman and Dr Manoj Agny cardiac and transplant surgeon at Jaslok hospital Mumbai as co-chairman In Maharashtra a total of six heart transplants have been conducted so far “The goal of transplantation is to improve the quality of life The committee members had studied the entire issue and prepared a final draft of the revised guidelines that define an organ allocation system” Dr Gauri Rathod assistant director Human Organ Transplant Cell Directorate of Health Maharashtra told The Indian Express Share This Article Related Article The guidelines on how to allocate organs of the donor and identifying the really critical end-stage heart failure patients have been prepared in keeping with the framework set up by the United Network for Organ Sharing (USA) a non-profit organisation that brings together hundreds of transplant and organ procurement professionals Among the suggested criteria for a cardiac donor is the age limit The donor should be up to 55 years that could be extended to 65 years in selected cases Dr Agny co-chairman of the committee told The Indian Express Some of the other criteria for selecting a donor’s heart includes the patient’s health condition — he or she should not have had a prolonged cardiac arrest severe hypotension severe chest trauma with cardiac injury or any pre-existing cardiac disease Tests to check the donor’s past medical history and physical examination along with electrocardiogram and other laboratory tests need to be performed as part of the evaluation of the heart The person set to receive the heart has to be necessarily an “end-stage heart failure” patient To be precise only a patient with a heart functioning less than 25 per cent has been identified to receive a heart transplant Patients who have had systolic heart failure (as defined by ejection fraction< 35%) ischemic heart disease with intractable angina and who have had ineffective maximal tolerated medical therapy are considered for the heart transplant There are also other conditions like “intractable arrhythmia” which have also been defined as part of the new guidelines on who should receive a donated heart “Patients with cancers that have been in remission for five years and cancers that are low grade such as prostate may be acceptable for transplant” said Dr Anvay Mulay In the USA he said as many as 2500 heart transplants were done every year while another 4200 were on the waiting list “But in India we need a proper system of identifying which are the really critical patients and whose heart can be selected from among the brain stem deaths” he said At present there are five hospitals — Jaslok Fortis Kokilaben Ambani Jupiter and Asian Heart (all in Mumbai) — which are conducting heart transplants “We have also set guidelines to advise the hospitals to allow a donor organ for a patient with supra urgent needs There are 14 patients on the waiting list for a heart” said Dr Agny
