public relations guru Max Clifford was found guilty of eight indecent assaults on women and girls as young as 15 The 71-year-old silver-haired celebrity publicist was found guilty by a jury at Southwark Crown Court which had been deliberating on the verdict at the end of a trial involving a string of assaults which happened over nearly 20 years He was cleared of two charges of indecent assault while the jury failed to reach a verdict on another charge Clifford has been bailed and will be sentenced on Friday Judge Anthony Leonard warned him that the fact he was granted bail was no indication of the sentence that would be passed Clifford was arrested by detectives from Operation Yewtree in December 2012 and charged in April 2013 The operation was launched by Scotland Yard to investigate sexual abuse allegations against media personalities dating back a few years Clifford has become the first person to be convicted under Operation Yewtree During the trial prosecutors portrayed him as a well-practised manipulator who promised to boost his victims’ careers and get them to meet celebrities in exchange for sexual favours The celebrity publicist who had also represented Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty soon after her ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ win in the UK back in 2007 had vowed to clear his name over the “completely false” allegations Speaking outside court verifying each hoax call as well as the inconvenience caused to control room personnel due to abusive calls the Mumbai Police have decided to crackdown severely on abusive and hoax callers Police sources said it had now decided to ensure that all hoax or abusive callers were traced and brought to book so that it could serve as a deterrent to others contemplating similar offences Accordingly the police took a review of all recent cases of hoax calls as well as cases where unidentified callers had used abusive language with control room personnel and the crackdown was planned Confirming the crackdown Mumbai Police spokesperson DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni said “The decision was taken at a meeting between the commissioner of police and all joint commissioners of police where the seriousness of the offence was discussed All police stations and crime branch units were subsequently instructed to ensure that all cases of hoax calls or abusive calls were detected” Since January 1 the police have arrested two accused for speaking in abusive language with female personnel manning the control room and two for making hoax calls The abusive callers were charged for outraging the modesty of a woman while the hoax callers were charged with public mischief under the Indian Penal Code Police officers said the highest number of hoax calls were from callers who claimed to have either planted bombs or those who simply said bombs would explode at a particular location A total of 31 calls about supposed bombs in Mumbai were received by the control room in 2014 “Earlier the mindset observed towards investigation of hoax calls was that detection would be very difficult as the calls were made from public telephones which are used by hundreds of people throughout the day Now with cell phones being affordable to all strata of society public telephones are hard to find and most of the calls are made from cell phones This also means that tracing such calls is easier and it is only a matter of tracing the location as fast as possible With every passing hour the possibility of the accused discarding the cell phone or SIM card rises We have instructed all police personnel that cases can be cracked if worked on speedily and that it needs to be done without fail” said a senior police officer Another officer added “While hoax calls end up wasting several hours and the effort of multiple agencies like the local police the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad and the local Crime Branch unit abusive calls have an adverse effect on personnel If a policewoman takes an abusive call it could affect her ability to take the next call which might be an important one Swift and strict penal measures are the best deterrents in such cases” For all the latest Mumbai News download Indian
